5 Months Old

Well believe it or not, as of today, Ben is 5 months old...

It's been a really great month! He's learned to eat solid, albeit mushy foods, he's started sleeping solidly thru the night, having great conversations, reaching for toys, rolling over... Actually that's just the beginning and there is a lot, so let me break it down... :)

Eating solid foods- We started him with rice cereal, and while it was a messy start, he is a pro now. Next we went with Sweet Potatoes, and he LOVED them! After a week we moved on to Green beans, those were pretty good, quickly after that on to sweet peas. Those were okay too. Now we have discovered his absolute favorite so far... CARROTS!!! I'm actually very excited about this, because if the old saying is true, and carrots are really good for your eyes, then maybe we can offset some of the genetic disadvantages he has in this area!! :)

Sleeping thru the night- Everyone always tells you that the first time your child sleeps thru the night it will scare you, and no matter how much you say it won't, it does. Ben slept thru the night, and I am talking from 10pm-6am Sunday June 14th. I woke up that Monday morning not only in panic because I hadn't heard him, but also because he has become my alarm clock so we were officially running late :). He slept solidly every night that week and after the initial shock, it was wonderful. One morning he didn't even wake up, I just moved him from the bed to the car seat and he woke up for my mom later that morning. What attributes to this wonderful new sleep pattern?? I have NO IDEA!! There are only two things we have been doing differently. One, and probably the most influential piece being the solid food schedule, but we also have started putting him on his stomach to sleep, I know call the parent police, but it seems to be more comfortable for him and he is doing just GREAT! I wouldn't even consider this if he didn't have the strength to hold his head up, move his neck around and roll over at will...

That leads us right into Rolling Over and Reaching for Toys- Ben can officially roll from his back to stomach and stomach to back any time he wants to. The key term there being "when he wants to." Ben has also learned, that even though he CAN roll over, many times he doesn't NEED to roll over to get what he wants. What can I say, he's already looking for the easy way out... Gonna have to work on that... This is one of those situations where I'm going to have to look at myself and try to change before I can change him... Parenting is HARD!!!

Ben had his first Smith family reunion and met his Great Aunts and Uncles and cousins, most of them for the first time. It's always great to see family, and it was a joy to be able to introduce them to Benjamin. They had scavenger hunts, went shopping, enjoyed spending time together and just had a great weekend. While there we went for a swim at the lodge swimming pool... Ben loves the water, no surprise there given how much he enjoys bath time... :) Here are some pics from the different swimming and summer activities. :)

Lovin the early evening sunshine!!

Now that we're back in town, he and Lillian can hang out in Nana and PoppaD's Pool...

And he hates getting out of the water... This is our sad face... Isn't he pathetic. :)

Let's insert here about our first Fathers Day... :) We had a great day planned for Tyler, complete with church, lunch with the Smith's, Dinner with the Webb's, but mostly just doing what Tyler wanted to do to celebrate. Things didn't go exactly as planned as I was very sick and in a lot of pain most of the day. I was later diagnosed with gallstones and had surgery that next Wednesday.

On a side note, everyone was so wonderful helping out and keeping Ben while I was in the hospital. I really honestly don't know what we would have done without everyone helping out. He stayed with Nana, Gramma, Aunt Say, Uncle Brent and Aunt Tonya, and so many more people have offered to help I am overwhelmed with all the wonderful people I am blessed enough to know. I can honestly say that while I wasn't able to see Ben at all for 2 days, I didn't worry about him at all. I was always confident he was in good hands.

Okay back on track...If you were at all worried about the fathers in our life being cheated, don't fret, I am planning make up days to fix that problem! :) I did get at least one cute picture before everything started falling apart. :)

And after all up to this moment Ben has been mostly a Mama's Boy, but I think that's okay. At some point, inevitably he is going to prefer to hang out with Dad and the other guys, not his mama, so I am soaking up all this preferential treatment while I can get it. :)
